Artist's Statement
Hi, I’m Lucas. I’m into stories that are oversaturated with color, symbol, and drama. Stories that tear at the senses. Stories that know humor is essential to any faithful depiction of the human condition. Stories that are unafraid to take fantasy seriously.
I value characters that make us feel less lonely in our pain and weakness. Stories that revere human connection. Stories that leave us in awe of each other.
I am a lesbian and transmasculine artist. My queerness shapes the way I consume and create art. It deepens the possibilities for who characters can be and who they can be to each other. It has taught me that our fantasies, especially the ones we see on the page, harbor our most vulnerable truths.
I come from an evangelical background. My experience growing up in and leaving religion and religious communities informs the kinds of questions I am interested in exploring. The poetry of Proverbs and John’s gospel, the imagery of the Book of Revelation, and the melodrama of Genesis were foundational to my love of art and the development of my style.
